i don't think the british empire crumbled because of a few military blunders. i think it failed because of problems with the culture. most empires falter because of breakdowns in the culture, not pure economics. free trade is merely a symptom of a breakdown in the culture, and that cultural breakdown is the larger point.

let's look at a recent example--japan. like many other superpowers, in the late 80's everyone thought the japanese were unstoppable. do you know why they are faltering today? it's not just because of a stock bubble. that is surely part of the reason, but in truth stock bubbles are actually symptoms of a cultural breakdown.

now japan is the oldest nation on earth. why? because their culture broke down. japan was the first modern nation to legalize abortion in 1948. half of all japanese women are still single by age thirty. they are more interested in careers than having babies.

this is the downfall of japan, and this selfishness that puts the individual above the family will be our downfall as well.
