re: "Buck" Gone Bonkers

In chronological order, here are 3 CeBIT related posts from the man that loves to hate Nokia.

In the first he gets 4 of the phones Nokia released correct (although his "view" of the 9210i is incorrect) but he misses the one with the most mass market appeal.

The next day he discharges his venom on the new Nokia ??? 5310 ??? and talks about the 7650 released in November.

Does anybody know what the heck a 5310 is?

Did "Buck" file the report from a pub in Hannover ... or Newbury?

Did somebody play a joke on The Buck?

Later in the day he files a (none to original) post on the 7210 ... with uncommon restraint (Soberer?).

Unconfirmed sources have revealed some of Nokia’s new phones which will be formally announced Tuesday, as follows:

9210i- a new version of the Communicator with MMS (Multimedia Messaging) software, plus GPRS (finally) and Bluetooth

Mobile Streams view: Similar to the 9110i with WAP software, Nokia will upgrade its 9210 with GPRS, MMS etc.

6310i - a new version of the 6310 with Java/ J2ME and tri-band.

3410 - a new version of the 3310 with Java.

3510- supporting polyphonic ringtones and MMS.

Two of the key enabling technologies- MMS and Java- widely supported. Nokia will need the 3510 to succeed if it is to establish itself in the MMS space. <<

>> Nokia’s Joke - the 5310- the MMS Phone with a Black and White Screen

Nokia’s loss of momentum continued today with a series of woeful phone designs. The 7650 concept phone with its unstable Symbian software, the 9210i Communicator for posh people, the 6310i with the same reference design platform as the 6210, 6310 (again!).

But topping off this appalling portfolio is the biggest joke of them all – the 5310- a multimedia messaging (MMS) capable phone with a black and white screen!

The thing about MMS is that it ushers in a new messaging world in which color images can be sent over GPRS and 3G networks. So it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to put MMS into an entry level product without color. Nokia are trying to build up a mass of MMS phones (and Java) which is to be commended, but MMS without color is a contradiction is terms- it is like watching snooker on a black and white television.

Nokia watchers will also be shocked at the form factor of the 5310 which is not a mass market voice centric product. Network operators are likely to think twice about even bothering to order the 5310, which is likely to sink even faster than its cousin, the 5510. <<
