I agree. I think Sharon is capable of facing Israel's current dilemma. Problem is, to stay in power he must maintain the unity government. Bill Kristol compared the unity government to having the US jointly ruled by Bush 41 and Jimmy Carter together, and the image seems apt.

The essential nature of the dilemma is that the Israelis know they cannot keep the territories, but they know just as strongly that they cannot retreat before a terrorist campaign and have a terrorist failed state for their neighbor. The attacks on them would redouble, and they would have to reconquer the territory. That is, if their show of weakness didn't inspire another general Arab-Israeli war.
