Music is still an artform. . and no matter what elements are made available to the public, that fact does not change. Napster is nothing but a way of distracting the owner of a fruit stand so that apples can be stolen from the front of the store. Kevin makes it sound like it has some place in society. . . well, I guess there will always be crime.
Kevin should force himself to perform 20 remixes. I guarantee that by the 11th, he will be dreaming of other more interesting ways to spend his time. The concept that everyone has a desire to download bits and pieces of musical works so that they can piece them back together themselves is skewed to say the least. It is not a new concept, just more accessible. But the vast majority of people have no time for such mundane activity and MUCH prefer their music already completed. . . .and are happy to accept it in the form it is currently presented.
Yes, teenagers might have fun playing with music remixes for a couple of months, but that will pass in an MTV minute. One more thing that Kevin misjudges is the creativity necessary to create good music. The notes, samples and even Acidized loops, don't just evolve into great music any more than pencils, brushes and paints can be used to create a masterpiece by the public. Creative tools of all types still must be used in creative ways to make something worthwhile. . . otherwise it has no value except as a form of personal entertainment.
If you are just interested in entertaining yourself, then by all means, spend the afternoon working a jigsaw puzzle, doing a paint-by-number or re-working a mix from a 24-track master. What you will have in the end will still not be worth any more than what you had in the start.
