>>>Bill Kristol compared the unity government to having the US jointly ruled by Bush 41 and Jimmy Carter together, and the image seems apt.>>>

True but the Israeli players have known each other's weaknesses and strengths well for decades. They may not be able to stand each other but they have worked together in critical times.

I don't think for moment that Peres will abandon what is probably his last opportunity to remain a player; besides, few would miss him if he resigned. Most of the opposition politicians who make up the unity govt have no desire for a new election. Labor is dead for the foreseeable, thanks to Arafat, and wouldn't win if it ran unopposed. Knesset members abhor elections; they might not make the list again. American TV watchers may like Bibi's movie star looks but he offers nothing that Sharon wouldn't do.

So many intangibles; it seems foolish to lay out any domestic political scenario when Israelis sometimes have a tendency to establish their own ephemeral parties when they don't get their way.

You state the dilemma accurately.

A key factor is our future actions and I have little feel for the people around Powell. If he is having NEA write the papers, I'd be a bit concerned; they'll turn out lists of useless "confidence-building" measures cribbed from the files.

Still, Sharon won't turn away from any possible signs or openings. From what the papers say, he has his own lines out over and below Peres' freelancing activities.

So now, we await Cheney's return and the Crown Prince's starring role at the coming Arab summit. Would be refreshing if we had a quiet stand-off for a few weeks.
