Dan,

The Columbians got completely shafted in the deal. The people of Panama got almost nothing. The Panamanian pols got $10 MM to make the deal and we got the chance to build something indeed useful to U.S. security and commerce. There's winners and losers. I'm simply trying to get some folks to see that the U.S. does not generally act as a benign force on the world stage, but rather acts selfishly, and to further its own interests. Just as we are doing now in the runup to the Caspian War.
