Hi- I think that is a fairly true statement, although "anything else in the history of mankind" is a bit broad <gg>, as in includes the Black Plague and a host of assorted scourges. Religions have done their fair share, though.

Once you get past God, I personally don't think the choice of a particular religion is a big issue, unless it is one that actually inspires violence or hate. I look at a church as a place to go to commune with the Lord, kind of a middleman institution, which fosters the right frame of spiritual mindset. I don't think the great majority of people in the modern civilized world view their church or temple as an institution that regulates or controls their everyday lives.
