I don't think the great majority of people in the modern civilized world view their church or temple as an institution that regulates or controls their everyday lives.

The modern civilized world has placed religion in the marginal position it deserves. That's why we are modern and civilized. If we allow religion to regulate or control us, we will very quickly be neither.
