Neo-colonialism IMO is suitable for discussion in the abstract, at least.

OK, that's fine. In which case it should begin by accepting that that is what it is, and whether it's justifiable. I'd suggest an excellent starting point would be "Would we accept it if it happened to us? Would it be right if imposed on our children?" and it might maybe be followed with "On what principles was our nation founded?"...

I can't think of many modern examples where the people of a country have genuinely welcomed occupation and forcible imposition of alien rule (the installation of puppet rulers falls into this category).
I can think of many where the invader has proclaimed that they do. Afghanistan (USSR, 1982) and Tibet (China, 1950's) come to mind... good company there.

Leaving aside arguments about democracy, liberty, hypocrisy and so on.
I suppose neo-colonialism might work, if the imperial power really knew better than the natives what was good for them, if they worked with the natives rather than forcing an alien culture on them, and if the colonial rule was clearly in the natives' best interest - if it were truly enlightened. This could work even better if the empire had shown a consistent, long-term history and policy of actions undertaken for noble, non-self-serving aims.

However, if the colony then saw its principal (indeed, only) natural asset being extracted for the benefit of its alien rulers, how well would they judge that rule? What would they, and their neighbours, conclude was the real reason for their imperial 'benevolence'?
Especially if the invading empire had perhaps not entered with the glowing resume and warm support I presupposed?

Basically, how would you feel about being taken over by a foreign country, even one saying that it knew better than you what needed doing in (to) your country? What would you do?
Now suppose the invading power has attacked and humiliated your country before and is aiding your enemies. It has an alien religion, a long-standing cultural enemy. For ten years you have heard nothing but how it represents aggressive, imperialist evil... and now, here are its troops invading your soil just as predicted.
What do you do?
Answers might reasonably include references to history and current affairs in NI, West Bank, India, Zimbabwe, and the American colonies...

IOW, I think that it's wrong. And worse, for a sceptical realist, I think that it won't work.
Alternatively, ask - in what countries does the US have greatest influence, admiration and acceptance? Why not play to these strengths?
