Actually, alcohol and tobacco each are separately responsible for hundreds of thousands of annual deaths, and billions in lost productivity. All the illegal drugs lumped together don't account for even a small fraction of those numbers... nor even as much devastation as is annually caused by the use of 'inhailants'... which are commonly found in every American home, or prescription drugs.

One drug that has been criminalized - marijuana - actually has a lower medical risk profile than aspirin (it has been called "medically one of the safest drugs known to man"), and no deaths have been medically attributed to it's use... although many have been attributed to it's criminal status.

On the other hand - regarding tobacco and alcohol use - the tobacco companies have famously argued that these drugs don't cost society money... because the early deaths reduce the demand for social security and medicare payments.
