well, I guess surprise is the wrong word. Perhaps what I should say is that it would actually suit their creditors, one of their largest being Verizon, many who are also (interestingly), stockholders, to work out a solution.

BK would hurt them more than help, as it would kill the stock for a long period of time while keeping them from getting the money anyway.
The reality is they are probably looking to buy up the rest of the company on the cheap.
