AT&T in Competition with Leap??? From Yahoo Board

seattletimes.nwsource.com .html

"Faced with dire projections that say growth in the U.S. wireless industry is flattening, wireless carriers are now going after the minutes you spend talking on your wired home phone and marketing wireless as a replacement."

"AT&T Wireless estimates that digging into the market of landline minutes could potentially be worth more than $50 billion in sales to the wireless industry. The company is formulating rate plans they hope will look more like your Qwest phone bill.

"Our approach is to go after that broad wireline market with unique rate plans that will offer a small footprint (the area from which you can make an outgoing call), but most likely an unlimited amount of minutes," said Bob Johnson, executive vice president of national operations at AT&T Wireless.

"It won't have all the bells and whistles — but we're trying to skinny it down so it mimics as best as possible a fixed landline service."
