when someone feels the need to tell that person they are now on 'ignore'

IMO, that usually means they aren't on ignore.

I find my brain has a perfectly effective filtering mechanism, based on poster name and post length... and if someone should undergo a Damascene conversion and post something worth reading (or indeed replying to) I can do so.

Having said which, I used the ignore on Y! because as well as spammers, there were some posters with opinions inversely proportional to their charm - they added nothing but misanthropic volume, and there wasn't (isn't?) a 10x read.
Amazing how much swifter and pleasanter boards became to follow after that :)
