Re: "There's a big problem with confusing selfishness with self-protection. The selfishness is what causes animosity and 911 incidents. Don't you agree?"
Certainly not. Religious fanaticism caused 911, and all the good behavior in the world that is short of converting ourselves to Islam, ensures events like 911 will continue to take place, if the extremists aren't put down cold.
In these circumstances, our actions in response to 911 such as they are, offer the best route to a future that is "mellow, fair, and well-ordered."
You are concerned about pissing others off with our defense, and certainly that can happen. However, to take your suggested path is to ensure the ability of a rather strong enemy to attack us more. There is no reason to believe that I've seen, which would indicate our fanatical enemies will lay down short of our destruction, and the destruction of all other infidels. This is certainly not just propaganda I spout, thank-you, it is the enemies word.
I know it seems unbelievable that Osama really acts based on the simple motive I've noted here, just as it seems impossible to me(not having lived through it), that a Hitler existed, or the events of WWII could have ever actually taken place. Yes, it is all quite astounding. But, TRUE. Our best behavior is shit to Muslims like Osama's bunch...and they will fight to destroy us, period, regardless of how good you would have us act. We have chosen the safest option for our future. Go ask Joe Lieberman, he agrees with the vast bulk of us.
