I did walk, absolutely.

A block to elementary, a mile to high school. There were no busses in our small town. Walks to school were a great joy, especially the one back home, even in the dead of winter. My own girls could walk to their three schools, but ... in a sad commentary ... we usually drove them for security reasons, even though our community was a "safe" one.

The school experience now is vastly different, including early day-care schooling, middle school, bussing, super-organized activities and sports, and similar modern touches. Some really nice aspects of childhood got lost along the way.
