Charles Re...They need a superior solution and not just price/performance but absolute performance to regain that piece of the market and head for the magical 30%.<<<<<<<<<<

I don't know where you are coming up with this. The market place has always been about price performance. You could say that in the past the PC market rewarded the top performers. However,in the PC market of today, at least 90% of PCs sold are below that 5% top; and AMD dominates almost every speed range below 2100 as far as price performance goes. Just read Anands or Sharkeys. What makes you think the market won't gravitate towards price/performance here? When there is a demand, the design wins will come. Just look at the latest sales graphs. AMD is up to 10% of corporate, 205 of gov. and 28% of small business, and 33% of retail.

The market is full of examples of dominant companies losing their edge and falling behind in price/performance. One of the most memorable is the Japanese carmakers, who not only overcame a poor image, but also nationalism, and concern about jobs, in the 70s. If the Japanese could do it with price performance under those circumstances, why couldn't AMD do it here; under far more benign circumstances.
