Lights, Camera, Action -- Sony Brings a Larger Screen to New VAIO Notebook PC

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002--

Mobile Pentium 4 Notebook PC Yields Desktop Power and the Viewable
Screen Size of a 17-inch CRT in one Portable Package
In another first, Sony is proving that you don't need to monopolize an entire desk to obtain the benefit of a desktop PC.

All the muscle needed to run the most intense business, gaming or video applications and larger-than-life, high-resolution graphics are available to go in the company's newest VAIO(R) notebook PC.

The GRX model is literally the biggest thing ever to come out of VAIO notebooks. It's the first notebook PC ever with an available 16.1-inch UXGA TFT display and the first VAIO PC to house the Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 processor - M. And with its multitude of connection options, advanced graphics and DVD capabilities, the GRX PC was designed for both work and play.

"We're talking extreme entertainment value here," said Mark Hanson, vice president and general manager for VAIO PC marketing at Sony Electronics. "Imagine watching movies or even editing your own home movies or business presentations on a giant screen TV. The GRX notebook provides a similar type experience -- total immersion."

The built-in display offers a viewing area similar to a standard 17-inch CRT monitor in a flat, space-saving panel. The 1600x1200 pixel resolution yields 144 percent more viewing space than an XGA (1024x768) LCD display. Movies played on the GRX model's DVD drive captivate the viewer with vibrant color and rich texture. And the integrated box speaker system adds one more dimension to the stunning PC theater experience.

Combining Desktop Substance with Notebook Style

All GRX models come with massive hard drives and a CD-RW/DVD combo drive in a hot swappable multi-bay that can alternatively accommodate an extra battery for up to four hours of unplugged operation. The new series also offers two PC card slots that can house the VAIO wireless LAN card for high-speed wireless access to the Internet or other PCs, a Memory Stick(R) media slot for exchanging pictures, music, data and videos and an i.LINK(R) (IEEE 1394) digital interface for swift sharing of files between compatible digital appliances. Each GRX model comes with Sony's exclusive personal video digital editing software package that allows home movie enthusiasts and multimedia designers to take control of their media and wring maximum performance from their system.

To ensure the highest clarity for business presentations or the latest graphics-intensive gaming software, each model is outfitted with the latest high-speed graphic chipset, for top quality 3D detail and responsiveness.

All of this is packed into a slick, thin-profile casing, with a stainless steel keyboard mechanism that strikes the just the right pitch for comfortable, quick typing. For all its might, the new notebook is surprisingly portable at 8 to 8.6 pounds.

Big Power and Memory for a Better Bottom Line

The VAIO GRX PC will be available later this month in three retail configurations and a number of build-to-order options for business buyers. All three retail models, the GRX590 GRX570 and GRX550, come standard with 512 MB of DDR RAM. The GRX590 model, with a 40 GB hard drive, is bundled with a wireless LAN PC card and will cost about $3,000. The GRX570 model also sports a 40 GB hard drive and will be available for approximately $2,500. The GRX550 model, with a 30 GB hard drive and a 15-inch XGA TFT display, will be available for about $2,100. All retail models are fully loaded with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition.
