I once worked at a traffic stop with a deputy sheriff during a bad fire season. We asked all the drivers for their licenses (for no particular reason) and the deputy reached in one car and pulled out a bag of pot. It wasn't much and the kids went on their way, but the deputy kept the pot.

Now I don't want something like that happening to me when I'm coming in from hunting or from the firing range, or for that matter, if I'm just driving over to my son's house. Having my firearms confiscated while the deputy checks the list and possibly losing control of them is abhorrent to me. I'm a law abiding citizen, but you people are trying to do everything you can to make your pet peeve my biggest headache.

The ATF is just one of many federal law-enforcement agencies. Many government bureaus, such as the one I work for and others, have their own police force. I don't like it, and you wouldn't either if you knew the true size of the federal police force you get when all these guys are called up for some special mission. They are there, just waiting for another Randy Weaver to come out of the woodwork.

It was a stupid mistake to speak of "jack-booted" thugs, but that doesn't mean that the concept of overbearing federal law dogs is overblown. I'm sure ATF agents are very professional guys. But they don't make me feel one bit safer.

Nor, for that matter, do the huge security lines at airports. All a terrorist has to do is wait in line during rush hour and he'll wipe out a lot more people than can get on one airplane.
