Hi Wolf. Thanks for the reference.

Check out another Di7026 message, especially item #4. I can't imagine there will be a lack of volunteers for a head to head marketing trials. In fact it may raise our public profile.

So what the odds of this happening??

You asked 'how many mg's of dmso would a 4 time a day pennsaid user rub on in the course of that day?'
First I have problems concerning the quantity they use on the site your sited. 50mg is about 50 microliter, or about 2 small drops with a micropipetter. That can't be the limit. It's a bit confusing. Anyhow here are some of my thoughts below:

I hope these following points would provide at least partial answers to your questions.

(1) Pennsaid contains 45.4% DMSO.

(2) Each Pennsaid application is probably around 1-2 ml (DMSO has a density of around 1, thus 1ml of DMSO=1gram) in volume depending on the size of the area. For 2 ml of Pennsaid, there is about 1 ml of DMSO.

(3) I don't know how much of DMSO is actually absorbed into circulation when applied topically. However, most absorbed DMSO is excreted quickly in the urine and does not stay in the blood. The amount recommended from your post is for effective blood concentrations, not for topical application in which only a small fraction is absorbed and even less stays in the blood for more than a few minutes.

(4) Ethanol is listed in the same category as DMSO. In a bottle of beer of 341 ml that contains 5% (v/v) of alcohol, there is 17 ml of ethanol in that very bottle. Drinking that bottle is equivalent to an intake of 17 ml of ethanol, while a 2 ml Pennsaid topical treatment would provide a fraction of the 1 ml of DMSO in Pennsaid (since only a fraction is absorbed)
