It depends on what level of truth we are talking about.

For example, take the case of a man who confesses to his wife of an affair with another woman that occurred years ago. The man wants to get this off his conscience, and feels better about it afterward.

The wife feels betrayed and devastated.

IMO, this is a selfish and unnecessary exercise in "truth." It does much more harm than good.
