LindyBill,

Allied special forces who go out on recon "hunter-killer" missions in the mountains for days at a time, sniping Al Quaeda as they poke their heads out from a cave, or up from behind a mortor or gun emplacement, are probably the most effective units in the field. If anything will demoralize Al Quaeda fighters, and provide the lowest cost/kill, its these recon special forces. Governments don't like to talk about them, and they don't get much media coverage, because they are very tough SOB's who do unsavory jobs that would offend most people's sensibilities. Also, unlike America's special forces, they don't whine about not having sleeping bags and hot meals as seen on CNN:-))....Once spring arrives, with allied special forces recon units placed at the key mountain passes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, just stepping over the border will mean getting one between the eyes. American forces should stick to what they do best-delivering high tech ordnance and providing air and logistical support for the real men in the field.
