NEW YORK, July 8 (Reuter) - Prudential Securities analyst
Don Young said he upgraded his rating on the personal computer
industry group to buy from hold.
-- said reiterated Compaq Computer Corp (NYSE:CPQ) as the
"single best idea" in the group.
-- said in a note that expects the second quarter to mark
"the bottom" and that sees the industry as poised for rapid
acceleration in demand.
-- said he expected Compaq to announce a reengineering of
its dealer channel on Thursday that will help the company gain
market share with a lower pricing strategy.
-- Compaq is expected to report second quarter results
Thursday.
-- Young said he believes lowered prices will cause more
competitive pressure on companies such as Dell Computer Corp
(NASDAQ:DELL).
-- projected that Compaq's price cuts along with those made
by Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) will trigger a "dramatic buildup" in PC
demand and shipments.
-- Compaq was up 4-7/16 to 118-15/16.
