I think you have to review a few things. He didn't preside over 2 terrible years. In fact, CPQ did get to 35 at one point in 2000. As the market melted down, CPQ held its own. The real point at which MC was a problem was when he messed up and said things were dandy at Thanksgiving of 2000, only to shift gears 4 weeks later. That's when he became a pariah. Since then, his record is spotty, at best. On the other hand, the overall meltdown of the economy isn't his fault, and I'd say that he's done a half-decent job at managing in a difficult environment. That is, he has done a better job than 50% of the CEO's out there (better than CARLY, of all people, who some on this thread thought was the cat's meow back in 2000). But he hasn't been GREAT. Still, I can't see one GREAT CEO in tech right now. Maybe Ellison, but he's been very quiet lately.
So, relax. MC ain't the best, but there sure are alot worse. |
