It might indeed become a chip giant, assuming all semiconductor interests go into the new company they could end up with about 6% (nr 2 behind Intel's 15,5%) of the worldwide chip market.

Here it says the bulk maybe they want to keep some gems.
In the wake of the DRAM disaster, they have shifted their focus to system chips used heavily by the auto and consumer electronics industries, where Japan remains strong.
Everybody is trying to find the gems which will continue to bring in the money. Comms chips, auto chips are growth markets. We see IFX, PHG, STM also active in these areas, with product intros almost every day.
I next expect a major european merger (PHG, IFX or STM,IFX or PHG,STM or all three.
