Yeah, that is the first obstacle. I see Teddie beat him in the Senate race in '94. But if he can hang in and do well, he would have the following going for him:

1) Governor: Last Senator to make it was JFK

2) "Kennedy Image", the lack of this almost beat Bush.

3) Mass. Governor: this would pick up support in the East in election.

Once Bush was Governor of Texas, he was a shoo-in for the Republican nomination. The other possibility for '08: Simon. If he could win California, and get re-elected in '06, he would join the "shoo-in" club. The ability of a GOP candidate to carry California is a real plus.

I don't see any Democratic Governors coming up to match them at the moment. And I don't see any GOP or Democratic Senators who are of that caliber, either. However, the whole issue if 6 years off. (Providing, of course, that Bush gets re-elected)
