Dear Jerome: I'm not sure if I like this idea or not ["Compaq name will be retained on all personal computers by HWP"]. On the consumer level, I do see definite advantages. In terms of analysts future research reports on HWP, based on HWP's performance post-merger, however, I have very mixed feelings.

People currently on the thread who were here a few years ago will remember how frustrated people were when CPQ was called a, "Box maker." CPQ had become a lot more than a box maker, but it was the rare analyst or business news writer who was able to get beyond the box.

Now with the merger a seemingly strong possibility, Compaq's name gets reserved for the boxes. Come future (post-merger) HWP analyst guidance and earnings reports, sales, revenues, growth, etc. from the PC segment of HWP will be used as evidence that buying CPQ was or was not a good move.
