As long as Bloomberg allows economic ignoramuses to write in its pages, we are one more step away from turning the corner on the crisis of the Social Security fraud. The US government cannot "pay off" the national debt. The deflation such folly would create would destroy the economy and the nation with it. It can, however, return the money it has stolen from the people, through privatization of SS (and thus the elimination of the regressive tax so loved by liberals) and the elimination of the progressive income tax. The resultant growth would make the "national debt" into pocket change. But the consequent reduction of liberal power that would result from that is unacceptable to the entrenched and archaic socialist interests that have seized our Congress for these few important years.

We will ultimately arrive at such reforms-but probably only after a revolt by the maturing generations that the boomers are planning to enslave. I wouldn't want to be dependent upon the whim of the Congresses of this century's second decade to back my potential Social Security payment streams, regardless of whatever gold-embossed certificates the current Congress may choose to issue...
