Any large trade surplus indicates an economy in decline. The rise in the opium trade (for export to the West, BTW) would be indicative of farmers looking for cash crops because deflation had destroyed the value of any other activities. The exported opium (legal in the West in the 19th century) didn't bring the West down. Concluding that the increased trade in opium was a cause, rather than a symptom, of the collapse of the Chinese economy is, IMO, an error. Commodities are commodities. Whether it's rice, tea, sugar, opium, or coca, the farmers will raise what's most profitable for them...
