John, Adam, Re:>:"U.S. chip giant Intel Corp. (INTC) fell $1.17, or 3.6%, to $30.55 on news that Japan's top five chip makers are considering teaming up in a governmentbacked project to develop nextgeneration semiconductors in a move to be more competitive with European and American rivals."
>>seems like a complete reversal of fortune from the mid 80's, huh?
The Japanese companies (Hitachi, Fujitsu, NEC primarily) have undertaken similar national joint ventures to go after the computer market also in the last umpteen years. Got nowhere. IBM, Sun, HP, Dell, Compaq, the rest of the US companies have it all essentially, probably have actually gained in the last 5 years since the Japanese gave up on mainframes. I read somewhere that they are going after Cisco and the other networkers also. Gives them something to do.
