For those who haven't been following this saga, here's a link where you can monitor the sci.crypt newsgroup for what's being said about "Bernstein's machine." There's a lot of technical gobbledy gook being thrown about, but here's what I understand the situation to be...

The gist of it is that there's been a proposal made for funding to build a machine that could speed up factoring enough to render RSA keys less than 2048 vulnerable to attack. This machine is theoretical at this point, and there are arguments are ongoing as to whether it would actually work.
