I would be willing to bet that most political prisoners are sitting in cells by virtue of someone else's conviction that they "belong there".

You won't get an argument from me.

Since I have juries on the brain, I have a relevant anecdote from one of my trials. There was a young Hispanic man who was on trial for attempted car theft. The incident occurred after eleven at night. There was one good ol' boy on the jury who wanted to convict the kid on the basis that he wouldn't have been out at that hour if he weren't up to no good. I remember arguing with him that in some cultures south of the border they customarily eat dinner late at night and it was not unreasonable for him to be out and about then. He wouldn't hear of it. Sigh.
