We are nowhere near "the road to energy independence".

For example, if we drill in ANWAR - and accept Canada's offer of free right-of-way to build a pipeline taking the oil down across Canada to the only region of the US (as per Cheney's energy report) that experiences pricing flucuations due to supply shortages: the upper midwest; than that oil would all be consumed in America and would contribute to reducing our dependance upon imports.

On the other hand, if we drill in ANWAR and build a pipeline across to an Alaskian port (as the oil companies and the Administration want - but refuse to publicly admit)... than that oil will be put on tankers and sold for top dollar across the world (mostly to Japan), and will not contribute to reducing America's oil imports.

Watch what the politicians do, not what they say. If they want to export the oil then their claims of promoting "American Energy Security" are false... a charade.

If there are no plans for bringing the oil to the 'lower 48' then I say: leave it where it is until they come around to the view that it's American oil... and should be used in America.

American oil undrilled is American oil in the bank. It's not a 'wasting asset', it's been there for millions of years, it's not going to vanish. In the future, when we need it even more and the price is higher, it WILL be drilled (as will the oil off of Florida and the North Carolina and Virginia coastlines drilling of which has been blocked by local opposition).
