On the BBC World news last night it was said that the ice was the same area as Cornwall. Now that means something to me because it was where I was born and bred. I doubt though that it meant much to the average viewer - I was watching it in San Diego. A day or two ago, the BBC website stated the ice was 9 times the area of Singapore! Hands up anyone who knew the area of Singapore. I bet still fewer could visualize it.

Rhode Island? I had no idea its area was 1 250 square miles. Just think, that's a bit more than 30 miles by 40! I wonder how many bath towels it would take to cover that!

I wish journalists would spare us analogies that mean little or nothing to many of us. Still that's a lot of ice to melt so quickly.
