Should the UN fail to step up to the plate, after all the nasty resolutions they have issued against Israel over the years, it would be a signal that they lack the resolve to enforce their words.
Oh Hawk, that's so farcical...think Bosnia, think Rwanda. Of course they lack the resolve to enforce their words, they always have.
After all, if the US is the only nation that can achieve and maintain such peace treaties, why do we need the UN?
Excellent question. As a talking shop, the UN does function as a kind of safety valve, to let off steam.
And if the UN fails to contain Palestinian extremism, it will suffer even more humiliation, to the point where they will pull out (as they have almost every time before), and Israel will have free rein to deal with the intransigent Palestinian authorities, state to state.
Look, Arafat has been running a pure terrorist campaign for the last eighteen months (actually all his life, but let's concentrate on the last eighteen months). The Palestinians whine that they are abused innocents, and the whole world buys it, led by the UN. Israel will never get "free rein"; it will just have to take it.
Israel is not going to agree to a peace treaty unless it's assured that SOMEONE is going to guarantee their security against this arbitrarily imposed hostile Palestinian state.
The only someone that Israel trusts is Israel, for good reason. |
