I believe that what you'll find is that in an attempt to preserve its self-sufficiency at a time when much of the world outside China was flourishing and eager to trade many things with China, China instituted protectionist policies which choked off the trade, unwittingly ensuring their downfall(at a time following long standing surpluses as you've noted, I trust). Thus as the impending in-flow of innovations and goods threatened traditional Chinese ways, that flow was, sadly, cut off. I think you'll find it is safe to say that, unable by law to import much else save opium, China and China's formerly growing trade, stagnated while others took great advantage of the innovations of modern times. Free Trade works and China refused to allow it, bottom line, IMHO.
