The Jews of Spain were told to convert or get out, at the same time the Muslims were kicked out- around 1492, when Granada fell to the Christians. The Jews were welcomed (relatively and ironically) in the Muslim territories, because at that time the Muslims were much more tolerant than the Christians. Of course the Spaniards suspected the "Marranos"- you DO know that means swine right? They had forced the Jews to convert or get out, and then persisted in persecuting them, often killing them, because they then suspected them for converting. And guess what? Lots of "innocent" Christians got accidentally identified as "marranos" and got killed too (bully!). The Jews only "traitorous crime" would have been keeping their religion- IF they did that. Because that WAS the crime. And according to the historians I have read many of the people who were killed probably had legitimately converted.

do you know what the total population was at that time? And although only 6000 may have been found "guilty" lots of others were killed by their neighbors in waves of what we would now call "ethnic cleansing". I am sure that is something you can get behind- as long as it is the Jews who are being cleansed.
