The best prices for airfare I found largely evolved from your advice and a friend's:
1) Start at Yahoo, but set up your own personalized "My Yahoo" page, then set up a travel section where you can check fares from. These proved to be the best, though they mislead some, because you need to add $45-$50 in taxes and fees to whatever price you see.
2) Next to that, by checking through Orbitz, you can crosscheck through their partnership link with Hotwire.com, to get prices that come close.
3) If you have time to dink around, both of those can be beaten by Priceline.com, but such flights can't be re-scheduled or changed in any way.
4) Calling or online to cheapseats, cheaptickets, Expedia, Travelocity, etc, do not come close to the first three options... if price is the principle concern. They provide many other features however and for most folks, price is not the sole issue.
5) Getting rich in the market, travelling first class, or better yet, buying your own jet and operational/maintenance staff is really the best option.
6) Besides my first three points, the site that yielded the greatest wealth that I'd recommend to all who book their own flights is: nicefares.com
I think it's good for frequent or infrequent (like me) flyers.
