Car Bomb Kills Eight Near U.S. Embassy in Lima

LIMA, Peru (Reuters)
- At least eight people were killed and dozens injured when a powerful car bomb exploded on Wednesday across the street from the U.S. Embassy in Lima three days before a visit by President Bush, authorities said.

It was not immediately known who planted the bomb, which exploded around 10:45 p.m. (10:45 p.m. EST), recalling scenes of carnage from more than a decade ago when Peru was gripped by leftist rebel violence.

The blast was so powerful the body of one victim was blown around 165 feet across a dual carriageway separating the scene of the explosion from the embassy, witnesses said. Police were examining the body, which had a leg and clothes blown off. Part of a car engine lay nearby.

Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo, speaking to RPP radio shortly after arriving in Monterrey, Mexico, for a U.N. development summit, condemned the attack and guaranteed full safety for Bush's 17-hour visit this weekend.
