One thing that I seem to be discovering is that many potters are making use of all kinds of kilns for firing.

True. We are a proud but sharing type of folk. The thing is that there are many secretes or perhaps better stated quarks that everyone employes. But the basic idea of discussing kiln construction is two fold at least. Sharing your kiln construction and stories generates good discussion and invariably leads to a host of new ideas which in tturn can benifit everyone involved.

Some times though it's the glaze recipies that are most sacred :) Especially for those potters that make their living with a specific success of glazes. However, as you know, most potters are for the most part regional and don't fear the threat of competition by sharing their knowledge. However with the advent of the internet and the opportunities to reach a global consumer, there might be some hesitation in the future. Don't know, just thinking out loud here.

You mention how the rule is there are no rules. You are absolutely correct. If it works, great, that's all tht counts. And i think the notion of most potters being into primative firing might be traced back to all our true primitive essence of being. I know even as a kid, before I really knew what ceramics even were I remember tromping through old burning areas and picking up shards of ceramics or parts of melted steel or what not and thinking of the force and energy it took to cause such effects on the elements.
