NORTHVALE, N.J., March 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Elite Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Amex: ELI - news; ``Elite'') announced today that Elite Research Limited, a strategic collaboration between Elan Corporation, plc (NYSE: ELN - news; ``Elan'') and Elite, has successfully completed the initial Phase I study for the first product. It compared a once a day formulation of a leading pain management therapeutic against the twice-daily reference product that is currently marketed. The data showed comparable bioavailability and as a result the collaboration is moving to the next stage of development. Currently there is no once a day formulation for this compound. The parties expect a second product under development in the collaboration to enter Phase I testing in the next quarter.

``We are pleased with the progress made by the collaboration since its formation in October 2000. The two products address a market size of over $2 billion,'' said Dr. Atul Mehta, President and CEO of Elite.

``Combining the resources of both companies has resulted in accelerated development of these two products and underlines the strategic rationale for entering into this collaboration with Elite,'' stated Dr. Larry Sternson, President of Elan Drug Delivery .

Elite specializes in drug delivery which can be tailored as delayed release, sustained release, targeted release and pulse release. Elite will continue to develop products outside the venture and in collaboration with other companies. Elite has been issued several patents and few more have been filed. [snip]
