I believe that locking people up for crimes deters other criminals. I don't know if I have stats, but I can say that evil violent acts go up if there is places where the social and government structure breaks down enough that there is little or no law enforcement. And of course locking someone up reduces (but does not eliminate) their ability to commit crimes. I'm not sure I follow your argument that "It stops them while they are in jail", doesn't cut it. Thats a good reason to lock people up, and a slightly modified version of it (something like "it keeps them from killing again") is a good argument for the death penalty.

I guess you where saying that "It stops them while they are in jail" doesn't cut it if I was arguing that the death penalty is wrong. However 1 - I am not arguing that the death penalty is wrong, and 2 - Even if I was I could be against the death penalty while still beliving it does prevent convicted killers from killing again.
