Goldman, Sachs & Co. announced today that 160 individuals have been invited to become managing directors as
of November 28, 1998, the start of the firm's fiscal year. These appointments address the firm's increased managerial
needs and recognize the contributions of some of the firm's most valued senior professionals. The broadening of the
firm's leadership structure is an integral part of Goldman Sachs' goal of being the world's preeminent investment bank.Goldman Sachs now has approximately 12,500 permanent employees worldwide. The firm is widely diversified by
function, product, and geography. This expanded leadership group is necessary to manage an enterprise of this
scale and scope. Commenting on the new appointments, Jon S. Corzine and Henry M. Paulson, co-chairmen and
co-chief executive officers of Goldman Sachs, said in a statement:"We congratulate these new additions to the leadership of the firm. They are an outstanding group of individuals
whose exceptional contributions have helped distinguish Goldman Sachs as a premier financial institution. They
