The argument has been made that the death penalty does not deter murder, that statistics show that, and that that is a valid reason for eliminating it.

My argument is that if that applies to the death penalty, then those advocating life imprisonment for murder or shorter terms for lesser crimes now acquire the burden of showing (statistically) that doing so is a deterrent to those crimes. Otherwise the money spent on law enforcement and prisons is wasted.
