Tony,

1. Why break up a winning combination.

Adding something does not mean breaking something that is already in place.

2. Development cost.

Compaq sunk millions into Itanium, so it looks like they are willing to evaluate and develop experimental systems.

3. Server customers not comfortable with AMD.

That's not what Petz reported that he saw in Linux journals. A lot of those guys are advertising dual Athlon rack based servers. It looks like there is a market for AMD based servers, and some customers are comfortable with AMD.

It looks like AMD has found a small niche with these white box (or white rack) vendors, and these vendors have been doing very well against the big guys.
