...However, ASPs are expected to continue falling throughout the forecast period. Despite increases in port shipments, revenues also end up falling from 2003, such that DSL IC revenues actually experience a negative CAGR of 11 percent from 2001 through 2005.

As a result, DSL IC manufacturers must provide product diversity to cover ICs and technologies complementary to, and in addition to, DSL chips. The three major market segments DSL IC manufacturers are using to compensate and continue to grow revenues include solutions for voice-over-packet (VoP) and home networking as well as alternative broadband access ICs. The recent merger of Globespan and Virata points to how companies in this space must evolve to meet their customers demands. The success Virata found by pushing its software-on-silicon strategy for its CPE network processors was a perfect fit for Globespan's strong market share in the DSL PHY layer market. Now GlobespanVirata can meet its customers' demand for intelligent CPE that enable services beyond basic access as well as give their aggregator customers higher and higher port densities.

Despite some recent turbulence, Cahners In-Stat expects DSL to grow in its importance as an access technology. As telcos and other service providers look to expand beyond basic connectivity and deliver new services, the billions of lines of installed copper can't be ignored.
