The only conclusion I can reach from this is that both sides are
fond of big government - as long as it's their big government.


Even someone who wants minimal state interference might think there is areas that the government where the government should increase its role.

If overall they push for a huge reduction in the role of the government and a much smaller government then I think they can be called libertarians. I don't think the mainstream of either of the major US political parties comes close to being libertarian.
