Elmer,

AMD has no choice now because they're dead otherwise. If now, today, AMD knows hammer won't live up to promises they still have no choice whatsoever but to claim world leading performance because nothing else will keep those fish on the line and without those fish AMD might as well close the doors right now and go home. Any claim whatsoever short of "the fastest processor in the world" is death to AMD.

I don't follow. AMD has been around for decades, and only had the fastest processor for very few years of all those decades. What changed, and why is it now suddenly "the fastest processor on earth or death"?

AMD has proven they can make money when they have performance crown, but not having the performance crown has not meant death to AMD in the past.

While we are at this extreme level of speculation, how about we ponder what could happen if Intel loses performance crown across the board. Try this scenario:
- Take top 10 million Intel processors, the top 10 million. Estimate the ASP of these top 10 million chips. ($350?)
- Now estimate the ASP of the remaining chips in the market place ($75?)
- calculate the ASP premium that these top 10 million are receiving over the rest ($275?)
- multiply this ASP premium ($275) multiplied by 10M = $2.75 billion
- subtract this amount from Intel's quarterly revenue.

What is the probability of this happening? Greater than zero IMO.

Joe
