a dumb decision,

I read your link to the "New York Times" version, and the immediate difference between it and the "Washington Times" was that the "New York Times" version was much better written. They do get the best Journalists. Here was the key statement

"Police union officials said that the study, which showed that blacks made up 16 percent of the drivers on the turnpike but 25 percent of the speeders, explained why blacks were involved in a disproportionately high number of traffic stops. Currently, blacks are involved in 23 percent of traffic stops, the attorney general's office has said."

You can bet that if the figures were reversed, and 16% of the drivers were black, and were getting 25% of the tickets, the ink would not have been dry before the report was released.

This points out what I believe to be the major flaw in solving racial problems in the country. You cannot have an honest dialog about them. The facts have to be slanted to fit Black beliefs and White guilt.

I doubt if the report got to Ashcroft but it makes no difference. The Black Caucus considers him to be so "racist" that he would be blamed for any position he took on it. We have got to the point in this country that being a fervent "Evangelical Christian" is considered to be a bar against holding office by the left. I have no more use for a "Witch Doctor" than I do for a "Tribal Chief", but I think that this has attitude gone too far.
