TVX Gold Executive Files Lawsuit In Greece Over Alleged Attack

20 Mar 05:34

ATHENS (AP)--A senior executive from Canada-based mining firm TVX Gold Inc
(TVX) has filed a lawsuit after allegedly being attacked by villagers opposing
the company's operations, a statement said Wednesday.

John Raisbeck, the chief executive officer of TVX Hellas, was allegedly
stopped by the group Monday in the village of Stratoniki, about 65 kilometers
southeast of Thessaloniki.

Raisbeck was forced from his car and taken to the main square, where he was
physically harassed and threatened while three windows in his car were smashed,
the company said.

Raisbeck has filed a suit for violence, threat of bodily harm and damage to
property, TVX said.

Stratoniki residents have been protesting TVX's extension of a base metals
mine underneath the village. The company received a government permit to extend
the mine last month, but residents say the mining has damaged buildings in
Stratoniki.

The company insists its mining methods are safe.

TVX bought the former state-run Kassandra mine complex in 1995 with the aim
of developing a gold mining and gold processing plant near Stratoniki. It was
one of Greece's largest foreign investments.

But the plans were challenged by frequent and often violent opposition by
residents, who took the case to the country's highest administrative court. The
court overturned government permits for the plant, citing environmental
concerns.

TVX says its operation in Greece is still viable provided it is allowed to
extend its base metals mine under Stratoniki.
