Yes, the same claim can be made about the Mongols, on the general basis of a higher civilization. However, my primary point was not the improvement, but the residual barbarity.

You misunderstand about the Holocaust Rescuers. It is a documented phenomenon that those with greater than usual religious commitment were the main rescuers of Jews. They were not just nominal Christians, but priests and nuns and pastors and exceptionally pious laity.

It is rational to believe that there is something analogous to Mind and Intention behind the cosmos, because of the order that we perceive, whether or not it is conclusive. It is not in the same category as believing in the Tooth Fairy.

As I said, much charitable work has no proselytizing purpose. Even those works that do are done because people are trying to share beliefs they think are good. Most missionaries acquire neither wealth nor power, and undergo some personal risk. Unless you can document your assertion, I cannot see it as other than a marked bias.

I'll see if I can find any studies comparing 12 step programs to others.
